Michael O'Doherty: O'Connell Street is our Champs-Elysees

Writing about the closure of Clery's yesterday, Ryan Tubridy widened the subject to a sadness on what has become of the city's main thoroughfare, O'Connell Street.

"It is our Champs-Elysees," he said, "but gets treated like our Pigalle."

Much as I am a fan of Ryan, I must take issue with this pronouncement, showing as it does an unfortunate ignorance on the subject. Because on my visits to Paris, which are obviously more regular than Ryan's, I've noticed how the Champs-Elysee, architecturally impressive though it is, has turned into a cheap collection of fast food joints, cinemas and cafes designed to rip off unsuspecting tourists. O'Connell Street is our Champs Elysees, Ryan - and therein lies the problem.
