Luas is on track at last for link-up

DUBLINERS will welcome news that the city's two Luas lines are to be joined. The 6km extension will link the Green Line at St Stephen's Green to the Red Line at O'Connell Street, and on to Broombridge in Cabra, which will connect with the Maynooth commuter line.

The project appears to be on track, with the Government already committed to funding its €370m cost.

While news of the link-up, after a lengthy planning process, is welcome, passengers will not travel on the line until its completion in five years.

Residents of the capital have long queried why this commonsense connection was not part of the original Luas project.

The 2017 completion date means that it will have taken 13 years to fully complete the Luas, given that the tram system was first launched in 2004.

Better late than never -- let's get building.
