The fatal stabbing of a popular shop owner in Arklow is an absolute tragedy for all those who knew and loved him.

The Co Wicklow community has been plunged into mourning today at the death of John Deasey, who was known to be a kind and decent man.

His death at the hands of a raider has left his two girls without a father this Christmas.

Other family members and a circle of friends who had planned to celebrate his 50th birthday with Mr Deasey next year are devastated.

It is frightening to think that something like this can happen in one of our towns. We live in an increasingly violent society, but a killing like this truly chills to the bone. The manner of his death was horrendous, and our sympathies go out today to the many friends and family mourning a decent man.
