Editorial: Minister gets education in class politics
EDUCATION Minister Batt O'Keeffe faces a tough round of teacher conferences this week. His visit to the INTO conference in Letterkenny today came as some angry teachers tried to withdraw the invitation to address the conference.
The threat of industrial action is also on the agenda in relation to class sizes and pensions.
While the unions are looking after their members' interests, they are also voicing the concerns of many parents.
Hundreds of primary and secondary teacher positions are being cut, class sizes will rise in September and special classes are being hit by the cutbacks.
Parents and teachers do not want a return to the 1970s and 80s at a time when our education system is preparing for a huge surge in school enrolments.
They want their sons and daughters to have a proper education and do not want to see that chance whittled away.
