AS the country is on the road to recovery, it seems criminal gangs are flourishing too.

To combat such outfits it is vital that our public resources, and in this instance, front line defenders in the shape of the gardai, are properly equipped to deal with such threats to our security.

An Garda Siochana have revealed that they are aware or have investigated a total of 621 criminal gangs across the country. That is a phenomenal number and shows the strength of the criminal underworld.

For every 7,400 people in the State, there is a criminal gang willing to exploit any potential weaknesses.

Elderly and vulnerable people are terrified that they will become the next victims of crime, and the coalition government - led by Fine Gael who like to portray themselves as the party of law and order - must provide concrete proof that they are serious on cracking down on crime.

Golfing star on the rise

Well done to Paul Dunne for his efforts at the British Open since Thursday.

The entire country was yesterday willing the Greystones golfer to realise a fairytale that Walt Disney would struggle to put a script too. However it was not to be - on this occasion.

One thing is sure though - many bright days lie ahead for the young golfer.

Dunne held his own more than comfortably at St Andrews and the golfing world is well aware of another up-and-coming Irish player whose star is very much in the ascendency.
