It's whiskey - and cash - galore

Greenacres bistro in Wexford is having a good week. They flogged a bottle of Midleton Very Rare whiskey worth €6,000. Very rare is an apt term for the bottle as little over a hundred were made. It's nice for Greenacres, but it does raise a question about what kind of person pays that much money for a bottle of booze. I'm willing to bet you could count on the fingers of one hand those who can differentiate between a €100 bottle and a €1,000 bottle. As for a €6,000 bottle, is there really anyone who can taste the extra five grand? Is there anyone whose taste-buds are so sophisticated they merit the price of a second hand car on a bottle of whiskey? Or is there just a point where you get rich enough that conspicuous consumption becomes a form of entertainment?
