Young Irish man fighting for life after assault in Bulgaria
A YOUNG Irish man is fighting for his life after being viciously assaulted while on holiday in Bulgaria.
The 21-year-old suffered a fractured skull during the attack in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
He had been socialising in the Viking Club in Sunny Beach, Burgas, when the incident happened.
The holidaymaker was rushed to hospital by ambulance, and is currently in intensive care where his injuries are described as "critical".
It is believed the man's skull was fractured when he hit his head off a tiled floor in the club.
The Department of Foreign Affairs is aware of the incident.
"The department can confirm that we are providing consular assistance to an Irish citizen who was injured in Burgas, Bulgaria," a spokes- person said.
Viking Club said it is assisting authorities with their investigations.
"The incident happened near our main entrance," said a spokesperson. "It happened between a tourist and another who we do not know.
"We do know the tourist got into a fight in front of a boxing machine and it was our security that took him to the ambulance.
"After helping police in their investigations by supplying CCTV footage, we also know that a suspect has been arrested."
