GARDAI are searching for the crowbar-wielding attacker who brutally bludgeoned a builder in an attempted robbery.

The young Polish construction worker's arms were broken when he raised them to protect himself in what was described by a garda as one of the worst attacks he had seen.

The victim, in his 30s, was rushed to hospital, where he underwent surgery for his multiple fractures.

Attacker

He is believed to have been yards from his Bray home when his attacker set upon him in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Locals in the seaside town have said they were sickened by the unprovoked attack.

The victim had said goodbye to friends minutes before continuing the short walk up the road to his own home at around 1am. In a savage attack, the assailant jumped on him and began raining blows on him with an iron bar when he covered his head with his arms to defend himself.

The attacker rained down blows on the victim, striking his sides and legs with the bar, before leaving the scene without having stolen anything.

Neighbours at Green Park Road said they were appalled by news of the attack, but heard nothing at the time. The man, is believed to be single and in Ireland on his own.

"It's desperate, I hope he gets better and they get who did it", one man said. "You seldom get any trouble like that down here. It seems to have been out of the blue, it could have been anyone walking along."

Enquiries

Following enquiries in the neighbourhood, gardai said their investigation is ongoing and progressing "in a certain direction".

"It's a complex investigation with a lot to be seen and done," a garda spokesman said. "It was a horrendous attack. It was one of the worst I have seen in my time."

The injured man has been co-operating with gardai as much as he can, given the extent of his injuries, which have left him with limited mobility.

Language difficulties have also slowed progress in gaining information from him about the attack.
