Woman safe after night on mountain

A WOMAN in her 50s has been escorted safely from a mountain after she had to spend the night in the open air.

The woman got into difficulties while walking on Mangerton Mountain near Killarney on Monday afternoon and contacted the emergency services by mobile phone.

She raised the alarm at around 3.30pm but members from the Kerry Mountain Rescue team had difficulty locating her.

Rescue efforts were further hampered by weather conditions and had to be abandoned for the night when darkness fell.

The rescue was resumed at first light and members from the team located the woman at around 8am.

Rescuers had to be lowered by ropes to the location where the woman was. There they assessed her condition and brought her to where the other mountain rescue volunteers were.

Volunteers

The woman was uninjured and was able to walk down from the mountain escorted by the volunteers.

Damien Courtney from Kerry Mountain Rescue said the woman was in good spirits despite the ordeal of having to spend the night on the mountain.

"She was in a sheltered location so had been shielded from the worst of the elements," he said.

The woman, an experienced walker, had also maintained contact with the team overnight on her mobile phone.
