A YOUNG Galway woman who was killed in a road accident was walking home from a wedding celebration when the tragedy occurred.

Tracey Melia (24) from Glenreavagh, Corandulla died after she was struck by a car as she and her boyfriend John McDonough walked home from Peggy’s bar in nearby Claregalway.

The pair had attended a celebration to mark the civil partnership of two friends. They were both struck by the car just off the N17 at Aucloggeen, Claregalway at around 12.30am yesterday as they walked home.

“It’s just an awful tragedy. They had been at an after-party for a wedding in Peggy’s bar and there was a big crowd at it,” one local said.

Tragic

“It was as they were walking home that it happened. The driver of the car is a local lad and they would have known each other. It’s very tragic,” they added.

Ms Melia suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her 24-year-old boyfriend was taken to University Hospital Galway, where his is being treated for his injuries, which are not life-threatening. The driver of the car was uninjured.

Ms Melia is survived by her devastated parents, Hughie and Patricia, and younger sister Caitriona, who was abroad when the tragedy occurred.

Her parents are being comforted by friends and family at their Conandulla home as they await her return.

A post mortem examination will be carried out on the young woman’s body today.

The road remained closed until lunchtime yesterday to facilitate a garda forensic examination.

Local councillor James Charity said the entire area was in shock as news of the tragedy spread.

“On behalf of the community, all I can say is there’s widespread shock and devastation that someone so young with their whole life ahead of them could have it cut short,” Cllr Charity said.

“All our hearts go out to them, and the community of Corrandulla will do everything they can to support and rally around the family,” he added.

Ms Melia is the second wedding guest to have been killed on the country’s roads in just one week.

In the early hours of the morning on Monday, May 4, a 33-year-old man was struck by a car while walking back to his B&B in Castlemartyr, Co Cork.

It’s understood that the man had been a guest at a wedding in Castlemartyr Resort Hotel and was returning to his

accommodation when he was struck by a car at around 5.15am.

The driver of the car, a woman aged in her 20s, contacted the emergency services about the incident. The man was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

It is understood the man, who is originally from Tulla in Co Clare, had been living for a number of years in New Zealand and had travelled home for the wedding.
