Wife-killer Brian Kearney has sat his Leaving Cert Spanish exam in prison, sparking speculation he plans to return to his life in Spain on his release.

Kearney is serving a life sentence for strangling his wife Siobhan with the flex of a vacuum cleaner in 2006 - a killing he attempted to disguise as a suicide.

Before his conviction he owned a €2.2m hotel in Soller, Mallorca, with his wife. The business has since been sold off.

However, it seems the killer (58) has not lost his affinity with the country and is now awaiting the results of his Spanish exam, which he sat in Wheatfield Prison.

A source said that Kearney "studied hard" in the run-up to the test.

"He did the Junior Cert a few years ago and just completed the Leaving Cert last month," the source said.

"Despite the Spanish hotel he once owned being sold it appears he still wants to get back over there. It's very unlikely he will stay in Ireland once he is released - whenever that is. It won't be for a good while yet, anyway.

"He studied hard and would have spent hours in his cell revising. He is hoping to use it once he gets released from prison.

"He hasn't wasted any time while being locked up. He has already done a few courses in first aid and anger management," they added, describing the criminal as a "model prisoner".

Mother-of-one Siobhan was killed in the bedroom of the family home at Knocknashee, Goatstown, on February 28, 2006, while her young son was in the house.

It is believed Brian Kearney killed her after she decided to leave him, something that would have placed him under financial pressure.

An appeal by Kearney was dismissed in 2009.
