Vigil for pond toddlers

A RURAL community is praying that two toddlers who fell into a garden pond, survive as they continue to battle for life in hospital.

Prayers are being offered at Masses in Co Wexford for little Loughlin Doyle and his play mate, Sam Waters.

The 18-month-olds are believed to be critically ill in Crumlin's Hospital in Dublin. The pair were rushed to Wexford General Hospital after they fell into a pond in Loughlin's garden at his parents' John and Danielle Doyle's home in Murrintown on Tuesday afternoon. They were stabilised in the local hospital before being transferred to Dublin.

John Doyle, a qualified nurse, rushed to save the boys and pulled them from the water. It's understood Stephen and Irina Waters, neighbours of the Doyles, had dropped their son, Sam over to play with Loughlin. But Mr Doyle was horrified to find the infants in a lily pond in front of his house, moments after he turned his back.

A family friend last night said the boys were "holding their own" in hospital. "The main thing is there's always hope. We're hoping they live -- they're resilient little boys and they should be fine."

The hospital declined to give an update on their condition.
