UFC star McGregor pledges €50k to help the city's homeless
UFC star Conor McGregor has pledged to donate €50,000 to two homelessness charities here.
The current interim World Featherweight Champion took to Facebook to announce his generous donations.
"As we head into the colder weather, I am donating €50,000 to help boost resources for those who are fighting the homeless crisis in Ireland," he said.
The two charities he has chosen are the Simon Community and Focus Ireland.
"The work of both these organisations is unparalleled with the homeless crisis in our country."
McGregor will be appearing in Cork and Dublin over the next few days, and was in Waterford last night to meet fans, with proceeds from the events going to both charities.
Ashley Balbirnie, CEO of Focus Ireland, was delighted with the announcement.
"It's fantastic when something like this drops out of the sky - it gives everyone here such a boost," he said.
Focus Ireland held their Shine A Light campaign last night - with some of Ireland's top business leaders sleeping rough at Christchurch Cathedral.
McGregor said that he would be donating €25,000 "to Focus Ireland, which will go towards the Family Services Division that helps families in crisis move on from homelessness".
He added the other €25,000 would go to the "hard-working Simon Community homeless charity. This €25,000 will fund the mobile health clinic for a full year".
