Three people were killed on the roads overnight in two separate road incidents.

In Co Down, two teenage men have died after their car hit a wall.

The vehicle left the Kilbroney Road in Rostrevor shortly before midnight, police said, ending up in a field.

The collision caused a fire at a nearby oil tank which spread to a property.

A third man was taken to hospital where his condition is described as critical.

A female resident in the house was also taken to hospital to be treated for shock.

Inspector Stephen Humphries said: "We are working to establish the circumstances of the collision and I am appealing for witnesses to come forward.

"I would also like to hear from anyone who was travelling on the Kilbroney Road prior to the time of the collision and who may have seen a silver Volkswagen Bora on the road."

Meanwhile, a young pedestrian was killed following a collision with a car in the early hours of this morning.

The 24-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene and was removed to the morgue at Tralee General Hospital.

The collision took place at approximately 4am at Barnadarrig, Ballybunion.

The driver of the car, a 25-year-old man, was also injured and taken to Tralee General Hospital, but his injuries are described as not serious.

The road is currently closed between Lisselton Cross and Ahafone Cross to facilitate a Forensic Collision examination and diversions are in place.

Gardai in Listowel Co Kerry are investigating the incident.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses or anyone who may have been on the Lisselton to Ballybunion Rd between 2am and 4am to contact them in Listowel on 068 21000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
