Two men killed in separate accidents on the roads

Two men have been killed in separate car crashes.

An elderly man died and his sister was injured when their car hit a ditch and rolled over on a remote country road in Co Clare.

And a 28-year-old man died in a collision in Co Roscommon.

The Co Clare victim was named locally as John Geoghegan who was in his 70s and had an address at Abbeyville, Ennis.

His sister, who lives in Limerick, was travelling with him and is recovering in hospital.

Her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The collision happened just after noon on the crest of a hill on a winding country road about 9km from Ennis.

HSE ambulance paramedics and gardai were first to arrive at the scene where they discovered the car on its roof in the road.

Mr Geoghegan was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fire personnel helped paramedics to remove the injured woman from the vehicle before she was taken to University Hospital Limerick for treatment.

The road was closed to allow garda forensic experts to complete an examination of the scene.

Gardai have asked anyone who may have travelled the back road between Loughville on the N85 Ennis to Lahinch road and Inch on the R474 Ennis to Miltown Malbay road to contact them in Ennis on 065 6848100.

The Roscommon accident happened at Coolteige Cross at approximately 1.20am yesterday morning.

The 28-year-old victim was driving a 4x4 when it was in collision with a car and crashed into a field, hitting a concrete fence. The occupants of the other car were not injured.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to contact Roscommon Garda Station on 090 6638341.
