Two dead, two injured in weekend of road carnage

Gardaí are investigating a number of road accidents over the weekend that left two people dead and several others seriously injured.

A 61-year-old man died after the van he was travelling in hit a ditch in Co Kildare.

Paddy Casey was travelling alone between Athy and Kildangan when the accident occurred at 9.30pm on Friday. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

In Galway, cyclist Kevin Smith (43) died on Saturday after he was involved in a collision with a car last Thursday.

Meanwhile, in Co Longford five people involved in a crash in Ballyminion yesterday morning were lucky to survive. One passenger (19) was seriously injured in the accident on the Ferefad to Ballymacormack road.

Another man (61) was seriously injured after a two-car accident on the Ballinasloe to Athlone Road at Kilgarve in Galway on Friday night.

And in Drogheda, an ambulance carrying a child was involved in a minor collision with a car on the Slane Road yesterday afternoon. There were no serious injuries.
