Two arrests in Dublin as drugs worth almost €1m seized in series of raids

DRUGS valued at close to €1m were seized by gardai after a number of raids in the past 48 hours.

Two men were arrested after gardai seized cocaine with an estimated street value of €500,000 in West Dublin yesterday afternoon.

The seizure was made following the stop and search of a vehicle in Ballyfermot and a follow up search of a premises in the Dublin 20 area.

Two men, aged 34 and 55, were arrested and are currently detained at Ballyfermot Garda Station.

Meanwhile, gardai in Co Offaly have seized cannabis plants with an estimated value of €410,000 in three separate seizures as part of an ongoing investigation.

Gardai from Edenderry initially seized cannabis plants with an estimated value of €250,000 during the planned search of a premises at Clonmore, Edenderry at approximately 10.30pm on Wednesday.

There was a further seizure yesterday afternoon when Edenderry gardai, assisted by colleagues from the Tullamore District Drugs Unit, stopped and searched a vehicle close to Tullamore and seized a quantity of cannabis plants.

In a follow up search of a premises at Killy, Tullamore gardai seized more cannabis plants with an estimated value of €160,000.

Two men, aged 26 and 30, were arrested and are currently being detained at Tullamore Garda Station under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1996.

Elsewhere, a man was arrested in Co Carlow this morning after being found in possession of the illegal substance Pentedrone as well as a firearm and ammunition.

The joint operation seized Pentedrone with an estimated value of €20,000 following the planned search of a premises in Graiguecullen at approximately 11am.

Pentedrone is a designer drug which is a psychoactive stimulant.

Since 2010 it has been found as an ingredient in a number of 'bath salt' mixes previously sold as legal highs.

Legal highs are no longer sold in Ireland since head shops were banned in 2010.

Firearm

A firearm - believed to have been taken in the course of a burglary - and ammunition were also recovered during the search.

A 49-year-old man was arrested at the scene and is being detained at Carlow Garda Station under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1996.

The seizure was made as part of a joint intelligence-led operation between gardai from both the Carlow District Detective and Drugs Units and the Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau as well as officers from the Revenue and Customs Services.
