Trekkie transporter named best gadget
Star Trek's transporters materialised today as movie fans' favourite screen gadgets.
The futuristic teleporters -- often brought into action with a frantic command of "beam me up, Scotty" -- topped a poll of film buffs.
Runner-up was the DeLorean car from Back To The Future in a survey to tie in with the 25th anniversary rerelease of the time travelling hit. A high-definition version of the film opens in a number of cinemas tomorrow.
Third place in the poll of more than 1,000 movie fans went to Kitt, the talking car from the Knight Rider 2000 movie.
A slightly less hi-tech item in fourth was Mary Poppins's magical handbag, which has contents for any occasion.
Universal Pictures asked fans to name their favourite all-time silver screen gadget.
Back To The Future also figured in seventh position with Marty McFly's hoverboard which featured in the second and third films in the series.
Gareth Lowrie, marketing manager for Universal Pictures, said: "The genius of film means that when it comes to technology, nothing is impossible.
"Whilst we may have seen some of the gadgets become a reality over the years, sadly we're still a long way from seeing working time machines, transporters and hoverboards in real life, which makes films like Back To The Future and Star Trek all the more appealing."
The revamped Back To The Future films will also be released as a trilogy on blu-ray for the first time on October 25. The top film gadgets of all time are:
1. Transporter – Star Trek
2. The DeLorean – Back To The Future
3. KITT – Knight Rider
4. Handbag – Mary Poppins
5. Invisible Aston Martin – Die Another Day
6. The Neuralizer – Men In Black
