Tiny lake seeks heritage award
A small Irish lake is tipped to be recognised among the earth's most valuable heritage sites.
Lough Gur, in Co Limerick, could be joining some of the world's most famous landmarks and monuments on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) heritage list.
The area has a rich history, dating back 4,500 years, with stone circles, ancient burial chambers, cairns, Neolithic houses and standing stones.
Limerick County Council has submitted an application to the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government to have Lough Gur included on a list of potential world heritage sites.
Ireland currently boasts two other listed world heritage sites -- Skellig Michael and the Bend of the Boyne.
