Thrilled parents welcome first new arrivals of 2017
A baby boy born less than a minute into the new year has been named after actor River Phoenix and Walt Disney.
Newborn Arlo River Elias came to the world 50 seconds after midnight at the National Maternity Hospital in Dublin.
His overjoyed parents Elton Rooney and Stacy Kenny, from Clonsilla, are thrilled to have their "perfect" baby boy after an emergency caesarean section.
The Disney fans named him after the animator's middle name - Elias.
Arlo might have been named after the Guns N' Roses lead guitarist, Slash, if not for Ms Kenny's intervention.
Their other son, Axel (3), is named after the lead singer of the band.
"I ruled it out immediately, I wouldn't call my dog that, so Arlo it was," Stacy said.
A baby girl was born at 12.19am to delighted mother Guo Yan and father Gao Xiao Yong at the Rotunda Hospital.
They met in Ireland after moving from north-east China almost two decades ago.
Living in Clonsilla, the couple are "very excited" to have their second daughter, who weighed in at 3.6kg.
Born at the same time in the Holles Street National Maternity Hospital was Molly, weighing in at 4.3kg.
"We thought she would come a bit quicker - she was due on Christmas Eve. It's very exciting and there's always a great buzz," said mother Judy Turley.
"The staff and the midwives here that delivered the baby were absolutely fantastic, they just couldn't do enough."
Two MMA fighters from Navan - John Moran and Malgorzata Bialek Szymanska - had their first child at the Rotunda at 1.37am.
The two met in an MMA club and were sparring partners.
"She punched me in the nose and that's how I knew she was the one," said Mr Moran.
In Limerick, a surprised mother gave birth to her son, Odhran, on her kitchen floor, three weeks before her due date.
Denis and Aine Kelly from Lisnagry had hoped for a home birth, but not so soon.
"I'm feeling great. Tired, but great. I'll never forget it. I had him in the kitchen, on the floor. We'll never be able to look at the spot on the floor in the same way," she said.
