Three held as €1m cannabis haul is found hidden in soap

A MAJOR cannabis haul has been found hidden in a consignment of soap.

The discovery of the drugs - worth at least €1m - was made last night in Dublin's north inner city.

Around 50kg of herbal cannabis was hidden in bars of soap, security sources said.

Three Irish men were arrested as part of the investigation which came as a result of an intelligence-led operation by Customs and the new Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau.

It is believed the cannabis was sent from Spain and it is understood that the seizure was a result of months of work by gardai and customs officers.

Officers monitored the movement of the drugs after they arrived in Dublin and moved in yesterday as they were being delivered to an address in the city centre.

The three men, aged between 24 and 35, were still detained in Mountjoy and Store Street Garda Stations today and investigations are continuing.

"The drugs, which were concealed in a consignment of soap originating in Spain, were seized following a controlled delivery in Dublin City," a customs spokesperson said.

A garda spokesperson said the operations behind drug seizures "use advanced analytical and intelligence methods to disrupt criminals and dismantle their networks".

"Drug seizures play a critical role in targeting the livelihood of criminals and reducing their ability to carry out illegal activities," the spokesperson said.

"Drug seizures also help protect communities from the devastating impact of drugs."

The bust is one of the largest seizure's of cannabis herb in recent months and follows a number of significant seizures by gardai in recent weeks.

While most cannabis herb is understood to be cultivated in growhouses, millions of euro worth of the drug is also trafficked into the country mainly from Spain where a number of major Irish gangs are based.

Last year, customs seized cannabis herb worth well over €10m in a number of special operations while gardai seized over €30m worth of the drug in a series of separate raids across the country.
