Third time lucky for one shop with €5.9m winner
This supermarket has sold a third major jackpot winning ticket in just two years.
The Tesco store on Ash Street, Mullingar, sold a winning ticket worth over €5.9m to a lucky punter on Saturday.
It follows on from a €10.5m winner in May 2013, when Kevin Geoghegan and Carol Loran, split the jackpot.
A €1m Christmas Millionaire Raffle ticket was also sold there in January 2014.
The winner of Saturday's draw has yet to come forward, so staff in the Westmeath shop are speculating as to whether the jackpot will be collected by an individual or a syndicate.
"It must be a very lucky store. I can't imagine why anyone would want to buy their ticket anywhere else," said store manager, Joe Ryall.
"There'd be no point in going to any of the other newsagents or supermarkets, when they can come here with our track record."
There was a party atmosphere at the store on Sunday, which included champagne and balloons, and Mr Ryall hopes the winner is a local who regularly shops at the supermarket.
"I think there's a buzz around Mullingar in general. There was certainly a buzz in the store on Sunday morning.
"Obviously you'd hope it was a local customer, somebody who comes in here week in, week out to get their shopping and their lottery ticket," he added.
Other lucky shops nationwide include the General Post Office (GPO), Dublin, who sold a €7.45m ticket in 2006 and have had 10 other winning tickets; Hickeys in Skibbereen, Co Cork, who have sold eight big winners, €4m being the highest; and O'Neills in Bridgend, Co Donegal who have sold 12 winning tickets.
