Tesco donates its food surplus

GROCERIES

Tesco has become the first retailer to donate all surplus food from its 146 stores to local charities across Ireland.

It has formed a partnership with foodcloud, a social enterprise that connects businesses with community groups to ensure no food goes to waste.

"Wasting food is a waste of money, a waste of valuable natural resources and raises moral questions where there are people who have too little food," said founders Iseult Ward (inset left) and Aoibheann O'Brien (inset right).

"In Ireland we generate one million tonnes of food waste every year," they added.

Christine Heffernan, Corporate Affairs Director of Tesco Ireland (inset centre), said: "Even in the most efficient retail operations, there will inevitably be food surplus and we are delighted that through foodcloud's innovative app, we will be able to donate all our surplus food to people that need it."

Businesses that have surplus food or charities that could benefit from food donations can register interest on www.foodcloud.ie.
