Teenager knocked out trying to stop beating

An 18-year-old 'good Samaritan' was knocked unconscious when he attempted to intervene when he saw a man beating up a woman at city bus stop.

The incident happened near a pizzeria at the Crumlin Road in Dublin at around 7.30pm on Tuesday, and sources said that the victim is making a good recovery from his injuries.

The male teenager, who is from the Bohernabreena area of Dublin, got involved when he saw a man assaulting a woman.

However, when he tried to assist the woman, he was attacked by the arguing couple.

The young man received a serious punch in the eye which caused him to be knocked out.

The couple then fled the scene and when the victim awoke, he went to a nearby relative's house.

He was then treated in hospital for his injuries.

The assault was reported to gardai in Crumlin, who have not yet made any arrests in the case.

"This was a very bad assault on a young man who was being essentially a good Samaritan," a source said.

The latest figures from the Central Statistics Office which were published last month showed that serious assault offences also fell, by 4pc to 3,015 recorded cases, in the year to June.

Other assault offences were down 3pc, while harassment complaints dropped almost 14pc.
