Teen walks free over lack of space

A DUBLIN youth awaiting sentence for a vicious attack on a 13-year-old boy has avoided being put into custody because juvenile detention centres were full yesterday.

Some €50m was allocated to revamp the national children's detention school facility at Oberstown, north Co Dublin, allowing eight extra spaces to hold younger detainees.

However, the Dublin Children's Court heard the facility was full and a judge had to release a 16-year-old who was before the court.
