Teen is charged with punching man in face

A TEENAGER has been accused of punching a man in the face in a row in a housing estate.

James Sweeney (19) had the case against him adjourned when he appeared in Blanchardstown District Court.

Mr Sweeney, of Ryvale Lawns, Leixlip, Co Kildare is charged with assault causing harm to a man at Castletown, Leixlip on May 18 last.

The DPP directed summary disposal of the charge and a medical report on the alleged victim's injuries was presented.

The court heard it was alleged that an altercation took place while the accused was talking to two friends at the entrance to the estate.

According to gardai, the accused followed the alleged victim and got into a fight with him.

The prosecution maintained the man was hit in the face and sustained a cut lip and swelling over his left eye.

Judge David McHugh accepted jurisdiction to deal with the case after hearing an outline of the allegations. This means it can be heard at district court level instead of being sent for trial to Dublin circuit criminal court.

The judge made an order for disclosure of prosecution documents and exhibits to the defence.

He also granted free legal aid after Defence Barrister Jennifer Jackson said Mr Sweeney was currently on a Fas course. There was no garda objection.

The judge adjourned the case to a date in October for the defendant to decide how he intends to plead to the charge.
