Taoiseach Enda Kenny officially opened Ireland’s “most innovative” newsroom at Independent House yesterday.

The state-of-the art facilities for the nation’s biggest newspaper titles, including the Herald, usher in a new era for publishers Independent News and Media (INM).

The changes at the Talbot Street offices came after a study of the best newsrooms across the world.

“The newsroom is designed to serve the purposes of the company’s online needs, and the needs of our daily and Sunday newspapers,” said Editor-in-Chief Stephen Rae.

Mr Rae noted that the changes put the company in a “unique position” to

embrace its “online future”.

INM Chairman Leslie Buckley said the “innovative” changes were essential to meet huge changes in consumer demands.

“It is essential for the future of the company to grow with new trends and to invest in the future,” Mr Buckley said.

He also announced a new €250,000 training programme.

Funded entirely by INM and run in connection with the National College of Ireland, it aims to train staff in new digital platforms.

Mr Buckley stressed the company’s dedication to the future of journalism.

“We have recently unveiled a new graduate programme and have taken on 15 new journalism graduates,” he said.

Mr Buckley said the programme – the only one of its kind in Ireland – will help to ensure the “future of the profession.”

Mr Kenny said INM was moving “ahead of the tide” when it came to producing cutting-edge news and other content across a range of platforms.

He welcomed new investments by the company in its training and graduate programmes.

The Herald will share the space with its sister titles The Irish Independent, Sunday Independent and Sunday World.
