Supermarkets battle

retail

Tesco has clung on the top spot as Ireland's biggest grocery retail, but only just. New data shows Tesco's market share of 25pc is now just a fraction bigger than the 24.9pc of the market taken by SuperValu.

Musgrave Group-owned SuperValu has been closing on Tesco since taking over and merging with the old SuperQuinn brand.

The two chains are now neck and neck in terms of market share.

Dunnes Stores is closing the gap with the market leaders, however, and is the fastest-growing of the big three retailers. Dunnes sales increased thanks to special offers.
