Summit to be proud of for Croagh Patrick
National Geographic travelled 10,000 miles to come up with the 15 best hikes in the world - and Croagh Patrick made it on to the prestigious list.
Listed alongside Mount Everest and the Grand Canyon, the Mayo mountain is heralded for its "stunning views".
Author Peter Potterfield traversed six continents in 10 years to compile the list and even mentions Croagh Patrick's supposed celestial benefits.
"Myth says that if you climb Croagh Patrick seven times, your entry into heaven is assured despite previous bad behaviour," wrote Mr Potterfield.
A climb of the mountain "provides ample beauty" noted the writer who also said that it was quite the "challenge".
Mr Potterfield reckoned that the most-uttered phrase on reaching the summit is: "Wow, that was the hardest thing I've ever done."
But the National Geographic writer said that the pay-off at the peak is the views down into Clew Bay and Co Mayo.
The Mountains of the Moon in Uganda as well as peaks in Canada, Australia and New Zealand also made the 15-strong list.
