Stolen jeep rammed into pub to steal cash
RAID: Thieves drove straight through security shutters
Gardai are investigating a ram raid in which a stolen jeep was used to steal cash in Clondalkin.
Thieves rammed through the front entrance of the Swallows Lounge, Deansrath, Clondalkin, and stole a "small amount of cash", it is believed.
A local source told the Herald that the robbers rammed the barriers to the pub's grounds -- which also contains a health centre -- and went straight through the pub's security shutters. The jeep was removed from the scene and garda spokesperson are investigating the double robbery.
"We can confirm that a 4x4 was used to break into a public house at Deansrath.
"The 4x4 was damaged in the collision and remained at the scene. It had been stolen earlier in the night.
"A small sum of cash was taken, and no one was injured in the incident." No arrests have been made so far, he added. Meanwhile, the local source described the devastation he saw at the front of the pub at around 6.30am yesterday, which also has an ATM on the premises and an off-licence attached.
He said: "The jeep went in through the front door and there was a lot of rubble all over the place in the lobby. They had broken through the shutter and there were bricks and rubble lying around, too.
"Whether they went through the gate or not I don't know. The pub is in a yard with other shops and a health centre there and I'm not sure if the gates were closed.
"The guards took the jeep out fairly quickly.
"You'd hear of trouble around there sometimes, but never anything like that. Certainly I never saw a jeep ram into the pub like that before."
According to the source, a Garda forensics team was at the scene taking photos. Last month, a gang rammed a Garda car in an attempt to flee when gardai had foiled their attempt to rob a supermarket.
Heavily armed members of the Organised Crime Unit, along with local detectives, pounced just seconds before the gang was about to take the day's takings from the SuperValu supermarket in Greystones on December 14.
The men were arrested at the scene.
