Stolen iPhone 'tracked to boy'

A TEENAGE boy was arrested for stealing a phone at O'Connell Bridge in Dublin after a tracker app located him, the Children's Court has heard.

The 16-year-old is charged with theft of an iPhone 4S valued at €500 from a male on Monday. He was arrested in the city centre about an hour after it was taken.

The boy was ordered by Judge William Early to appear again in four weeks' time, when he will be expected to enter a plea. As a condition of bail, the teenager must obey a curfew.

Cheryl to switch on Xmas lights

X Factor judge Cheryl Fernandez-Versini is to switch on the Christmas lights in London's Oxford Street.

She will be joined by chart acts Rixton and Jess Glynne when she presses the button for the festive illuminations next Thursday.

Thousands of shoppers are expected to flock to the street to see the star guests and the start of the light display which will feature 750,000 lower-energy LED bulbs.

'No survivors' after mudslide

There is no hope of finding survivors after a mudslide tore through a tea plantation in Sri Lanka, a senior official has warned.

There were conflicting reports about how many people had been buried alive under the mud at the Koslanda tea plantation. Disaster management minister Mahinda Amaraweera said the number of dead would be fewer than 100, but villagers said the figure could easily exceed 200.

"I have visited the scene and I don't think there will be any survivors," he said.

Autobahn gun trucker jailed

A court in Bavaria has sentenced a trucker to 10 years in prison for shooting at drivers more than 700 times over five years.

The case of the so-called Autobahn Sniper had baffled police in Wuerzburg until last year, when they placed vehicle number plate scanners along the road and compared all vehicles that passed with the times of the shootings.

The 58-year-old man was found guilty of four counts of attempted murder, grievous bodily harm and dangerous interference with traffic.
