Tony O’Reilly was the name on everyone’s lips last night as a new book exploring the rise of fall of the former Independent Newspapers boss was officially launched.

A Who’s Who of the media world descended on the National Library for the unveiling of the book by Today fm star Matt Cooper.

The Last Word presenter said the biography, The Maximalist, “paints a definitive picture of one of Ireland’s most remarkable public figures”.

“Tony O’Reilly’s life and career have been extraordinary,” he said. “It’s a life full of many great achievements from sport to business.

“He is an intriguing character, and his influence on politics through his newspapers is fascinating.

“But his life had many faults and disappointments and in the book we are reminded just what a charismatic and accomplished figure O’Reilly was.”

RTE’s Miriam O’Callaghan was on hand to unveil the book.

She was joined by Cooper’s TV3 rugby panel colleagues Keith Wood, Matt Williams and Hugo McNeill.

Former PDs leader Dessie O’Malley was there, as was Father Ted star Ardal O’Hanlon, and joked that he had actually written book.

O’Reilly (79) controlled Independent News and Media, the publisher of the Herald, from 1973 until 2009. He is also famed as a former CEO and chairman of Heinz.

The Maximalist: The Rise and Fall of Tony O’Reilly is in shops now.
