Sneak thief was stopped with food stall takings
A WOULD-BE thief who snatched the takings from a city food stall was caught after he walked "straight into the cashier" as he left.
Derek Tighe (46) was making his way from the kiosk in the city centre when he was stopped and held at the scene by security.
An accomplice had distracted a cashier working at the premises while Tighe took the cash.
A bench warrant was issued for his arrest when he failed to appear before Dublin District Court for the hearing of his case.
Tighe, of Croke Villas, Dublin 3, was found guilty in his absence of entering a premises as a trespasser with intent to cause an offence.
The incident happened at Lolly & Cooks in George's Street Arcade last November 9.
The court heard that another man distracted the cashier, bringing him outside while Tighe entered the kiosk.
He took the nightly cash bag containing €230 and, as he made to leave, walked straight into the cashier, a garda sergeant told the court.
Tighe tried to flee but was stopped and held at the scene by a security guard.
Gardai were called and Tighe was arrested and taken to Pearse Street Garda Station.
Judge William Hamill issued a bench warrant for his arrest and sentencing.
