Six-foot-deep sink hole appears in city street
Officials are investigating why a mysterious sink hole suddenly appeared in the middle of the road in Dublin's city centre last night.
At first glance it appeared to be an elaborate April Fool's gag.
But it was no joke for commuters when the six-foot-deep hole suddenly opened up outside Dame Street Medical Centre shortly before 9pm.
Although the hole was just about two feet across in diameter, it stretched for at least six feet underneath the tarmac and could have caused considerable damage if the surface had given way any further.
It's understood that two passing gardai noticed the hole and went to investigate.
The westbound side of the street was then clossed and traffic was diverted while the investigation got underway.
The cause of the hole was not known last night although yesterday's heavy rain may be to blame.
City council officials arrived at the scene before 10pm to take photographs of the hole for preliminary investigations.
Engineers are expected to undertake repair of the road and establish the cause of the problem.
