Six held as gardai hunt gang who killed young man and dumped body
Gardai made six arrests and carried out a number of searches yesterday as part of their investigation into the murder of a 20-year-old Lithuanian man who was beaten to death before his body was dumped in a field last March.
It is understood that detectives received key new information about the murder of Silvestras Stoskus in recent weeks which led to the major operation yesterday in Kinnegad, Co Westmeath.
Officers searched a skip and a property yesterday morning as part of the investigation.
Gardai have been working on the theory that Mr Stoskus was murdered by a Westmeath-based drugs gang over a small debt.
Detectives believe he was killed elsewhere before his naked body was dumped in a field near Broadford, Co Kildare, several days before the grim discovery was made by a farmer on the afternoon of March 18.
Mr Stoskus had no criminal convictions but was known to gardai and was due before the courts. His family offered a reward of €10,000 to anyone who knew of his whereabouts.
He was reported missing from his home in Kinnegad on March 8, and his body was found 10 days later.
Shortly afterwards, gardai removed clothes found in a lane near the Grand Canal in Edenderry, Co Offaly.
They were handed over to gardai in Leixlip who searched the area again in April.
Sources say the chief suspects in Mr Stoskus' death were known to him.
