Shoppers still wary

CONSUMER confidence dropped significantly within the month as shoppers grow increasingly concerned about what cutbacks are on the way.

The KBC Ireland/ESRI consumer sentiment index plummeted to 52.4 in September compared to 61.4 in August.

Austin Hughes, top economist at KBC, said consumers believe "more pain is coming".
