Large sections of the M50 south of Dublin have been closed following a serious road collision.

Diversions are in place between the junctions 16 and 17 as a Gardai forensic examination team heads out to the site.

There has been no reports of injuries so far, though Gardai said they were unable to share any details of incident.

The entire northbound section of the motorway between the two exits - for Cherrywood and at the M11 merge - has been closed to traffic.

Emergency services are at the scene of the crash.

It is understood the collision was between a motorcycle and a vehicle.

“We’re asking people to keep away from the area, and to stay in the cars if they're stuck in traffic on the M50," said a Garda spokesperson.

"We expect the sections to reopen today around 4pm,” said a Garda spokesperson.

The collision is causing significant knock-on traffic problems in the surrounding area.
