Searches to continue for missing dad Joseph
Searches will continue today for a father of five children who has not been seen for almost a fortnight.
Last night, the pregnant wife of missing Dubliner Joseph Whelan (37) told the Herald that her husband "does not have any enemies" and that she has no idea what happened to him.
"We have lived together for the last 10 blissful years and I have no idea of anyone that Joseph was in any dispute with," she said.
"I have no idea what happened, I just want my husband back," Sonya Whelan said from her home in Ashbourne, Co Meath.
After divers spent yesterday searching a lake near Virginia, Co Cavan, it is now expected that the search for Mr Whelan will move back to land today with volunteers expected to gather in the Murmod area of Virginia, Co Cavan.
Sonya, who is expecting her fourth child with Joseph next August, has been heavily involved in the searches, including crawling through ditches, fields and even pig styes.
She explained that her missing husband has been "the best father" to their two little boys, aged six and nine, as well as their seven-year-old daughter.
Mr Whelan's mysterious disappearance has also caused great distress for his previous partner and two children from that relationship who are based in the Blanachardstown area, it emerged yesterday.
No trace of Dublin man Joseph Whelan has been found apart from one runner and his jacket after he went missing in the early hours of April 4 from Virginia, Co Cavan, after he travelled there from his home at Brindley Park in Ashbourne, Co Meath.
"Gardai are gravely concerned for this individual's welfare, his situation is looking grave," a senior source said.
"However everything is being looked at and nothing can be ruled out," the source added.
Mr Whelan's blue 02 Volkswagen Passat car was recovered at the Swiftbrook Glen estate in Virginia on Easter Monday.
It is understood that nothing of evidential value was found in the vehicle.
Privately-owned CCTV footage obtained by the Herald shows Mr Whelan wandering around the Swiftbrook estate shortly after 12.35am on April 4 last and this is the last sighting of him alive, with reports of two strange phone calls being investigated as well.
