She has been nominated for two Oscars and is a Hollywood favourite – and now Saoirse Ronan is setting a Broadway stage alight.

The Brooklyn star’s new show has raked in close to half-a-million euro ahead of its official opening.

The first six previews of The Crucible, which kicks off on March 31, generated sales of just under €500,000 – which augurs well for the play’s 20-week run.

Slow

Carlow native Saoirse made her debut in Arthur Miller’s classic play during the preview viewing last Tuesday night.

Already it is being credited with helping to raise sales on Broadway after the slow winter months.

Last week’s previews took in more than €430,000 for the producers.

The Crucible is based on the Salem witch trials of 1692, with Saoirse portraying Abigail Williams – the teenager who tries to use the town’s terror to her own advantage.

She is joined onstage by Ben Whishaw as ex-lover John Proctor, and fellow Irish actor Ciaran Hinds.

The Broadway revival began previews at the Walter Kerr Theatre on March 1.

However, the start date was moved from February 29 so that the 21-year-old could attend the Oscars – where she was nominated for Best Actress for her performance in Brooklyn.

While most of this year’s nominees were enjoying glittering pre-award bashes in Hollywood, busy Saoirse missed the hugely popular Oscar Wilde party – as she was in rehearsals for this play.

Speaking about her Broadway debut, the New York-based actress admitted that she was “terrified”.

“This is completely new territory for me,” she said.
