Relationship break-up to blame for shoplifting
A SINGLE woman caught stealing goods from a supermarket has blamed her shoplifting on the break-up of a relationship which left her in financial trouble.
Annette Jenkins (42) pleaded guilty at Dun Laoghaire District Court to theft at Superquinn, Blackrock Shopping Centre on July 12 last.
The court heard that Jenkins was caught on CCTV camera as she left Superquinn with the goods, worth €41.85.
She also admitted when stopped that earlier that day she'd stolen two pairs of flip-flops from Arnotts, Stillorgan Shopping Centre. The flip-flops, worth €130, were in her bag when she was stopped by security staff in Superquinn.
The court heard that the defendant, of Canon Mooney Gardens, Ringsend, has 14 previous convictions but they date back more then 10 years.
Defence lawyer Rory Staines said Ms Jenkins had a troubled past but she has turned her life around in recent years. Mr Staines said she had no real explanation for her behaviour, except that she was in a relationship which ended rather badly and she was left in a financially unsecure position, owing money to people.
Mr Staines said that Jenkins' brother was in court and he was willing to help her as much as he could.
Judge Hugh O'Donnell fined Jenkins €150.
