Rape trial jury's incest option

THE jury in the trial of a man accused of raping his 65-year-old mother on Mothers' Day has been told they can find him not guilty of rape but guilty of incest.

The 45-year-old Dublin man has pleaded not guilty at the Central Criminal Court to raping the woman at her home between March 2 and 3, 2008.

Mr Justice Barry White said there were three verdicts open to the jury: guilty of rape, not guilty of rape but guilty of incest, or simply not guilty.

The jury are continuing their deliberations today.



Fake money trial evidence

THE trial of four men accused of having equipment for printing counterfeit currency has heard legal argument on the admissibility of interviews held at Tullamore Garda Station.

The evidence was heard during the trial of Anthony Sloan (57), a native of Belfast with an address at Ard na Mara, Dundalk, Co Louth, and his co-accused Liam Delaney (41), with addresses at Mountrath and Borris-in-Ossory, Co Laois, Kevin Flanagan (43), of Borris-in-Ossory and Andrew Poole (43), of Portlaoise, Co Laois.

The men have all pleaded not guilty to possession of the equipment at Ballybrophy, Borris-in-Ossory, Co Laois in May 2010.



Turkey floods leave 8 dead

EIGHT people, including at least four children, have been killed in flash flooding caused by torrential rain in northern Turkey, authorities said today.

The downpours caused a river to burst its banks, inundating homes and shops and stranding cars in the Black Sea port city of Samsun.

The country's emergency management authority said 21 people had been injured and two others were missing.



Writer guilty of inciting hatred

A COURT in Kyrgyzstan has fined an ethnic Russian journalist £700 (€870) for writing articles deemed to incite ethnic hatred.

Pervomaysky district court in the capital Bishkek ruled that Vladimir Farafonov had insulted the Kyrgyz people, but decided against the eight-year jail sentence urged by prosecutors.

Farafanov declined to attend the sentencing due to concerns over his safety.
