Prisoner given drugs in court

A man who slipped drugs to a prisoner in a courtroom full of gardai has received a two-year sentence with 12 months suspended.

The prisoner had been giving evidence in a prosecution case in District Court 45 and was about to be readmitted into custody, when his older brother Thomas McCann (35) put a white drugs package into his back jeans pocket. McCann, of St Joseph's Park, Dunsick Lane, pleaded guilty on his trial date to possessing €7 of cannabis and €84 of Diazepam at District Court 45, Chancery Street, Dublin on February 12, 2007.

Youth denies chase charges

A YOUTH has pleaded not guilty to dangerous driving in relation to a car chase in which he allegedly drove in the path of on-coming traffic.

The 17-year-old has been charged at the Dublin Children's Court with dangerous driving, using a stolen car, having no licence or insurance and possessing a stolen taxi plate. Defence solicitor Michelle Finan told Judge Bryan Smyth that a not guilty plea was being entered. The teenager was remanded on conditional bail to appear again in January.

China to launch new lunar probe

China will launch its second lunar probe next October in preparation for an unmanned moon landing by the end of 2012.

The Chang'e 2 probe is an advanced version of the Chang'e 1 that crashed into the moon in a controlled collision at the end of a 16-month mission in March. Chang'e 2 will orbit 60 miles closer to the moon and carry a higher resolution camera, designer Ye Peijian was quoted as saying.

Thanksgiving celebrations

Giant balloons, floats, marching bands and clowns with confetti brought smiles to revellers at a parade as steeped in the American Thanksgiving Day tradition as turkey and pumpkin pie.

Crowds six-to-seven-people deep lined the streets of Manhattan for the 83rd annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, as merrymakers gathered around the US for massive city events. Soldiers in war zones received phone calls of appreciation from President Barack Obama.
