Poles to elect new president

Poles will choose a new president on June 20 in an election brought forward from the autumn after the death of Lech Kaczynski in a plane crash in Russia last month.

Frontrunner Bronislaw Komorowski, who as speaker of parliament is acting president, is the candidate of Prime Minister Donald Tusk's ruling Civic Platform, a centrist, pro-business party.

Komorowski's main rival, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, is the twin brother of the dead president and leads the main opposition party, the right-wing, eurosceptic Law and Justice party.

The eight other candidates are trailing far behind. If no one wins more than 50pc of the vote, a second and final round will go ahead on July 4.
