Phone app helps track down theft suspect
A 15-YEAR-OLD suspected thief was found living in a tent thanks to a stolen phone's tracker app, a court heard.
The boy has been remanded in custody to appear in court again next week when he will be expected to enter pleas to theft and burglary charges.
Gda John O'Reilly told Dublin Children's Court it was alleged that on the night of last September 6, the boy entered the home of a mother-of-two in Bray, Co. Wicklow.
She and her two young children remained asleep as he stole a laptop from the kitchen and then went to the woman's bedroom where he took an iPod.
A week later, the boy allegedly stole a camera worth €200 from a car, and on September 16 he stole an iPad from another vehicle.
It would also be claimed that during the previous night he stole a laptop, headphones and iPod from another car in the Bray area.
Defence counsel Damian McKeone told Judge John O'Connor that the boy been badly affected by a family bereavement.
The boy began coming to garda attention last year after he quit school.
"When gardai found him he had the property on him. He was living in a tent at the back of a garage," the court was told.
