'People will give their bins back and just start burning rubbish', warns worried mum
A single mother of four has hit out at the incoming bin hikes and warned that people will hand back their bins and start burning their rubbish.
Miranda Lumsden (34) is a full-time mum to four children, who range in age from four to 14.
She said she was already "severely struggling" to cover her household bills without the added costs of pay-by-weight refuse charges.
"We have problems with dumping around here already and it's going to get out of control," the Ballymun resident said.
"We have people who will dump, but now they are burning the rubbish right at your hall door.
"I can only imagine how bad it is going to be on the first of July.
"A few of my friends that I have spoken to said that they'll be ringing up their bin provider and asking them to take back their bins and they'll go and buy one of those oil drums where they can burn the rubbish themselves," she added.
Miranda pays €20 a month for her waste collection to one of the biggest operators in the capital.
Despite having two recycling bins, her black bin for regular waste is always full for fortnightly collections, the worried mum said.
"I've a household of five. It just won't stop really.
"As much as the next person, I am struggling severely.
"The way I see it is the Government have suspended water charges, but we'll now have the bin charges and the rise on it is ridiculous," she said.
"I feel that the country is on its knees with everything and now they're bringing in bin charges.
"People have had enough, we can't take anymore," she added.
"I have a voice, I'm going to speak out. I have four kids, I'm on my own, I'm unemployed.
"I literally can't pay these soaring charges.
"I feel another protest will happen because they are trying to get blood from a stone," she said.
