A 52-year-old man died after being hit by a truck during the evening rush-hour in the capital.

The incident happened on Emmet Road, Inchicore, at around 6pm yesterday.

The man, who was a pedestrian, was treated by emergency services at the scene and taken by ambulance to St James's Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Screaming

Shocked bystanders spoke of the aftermath of the accident.

"There was a man lying on the ground. I could see that he was pouring with blood. There was a woman beside him screaming," one man said. "The emergency services came quickly. He seemed to be alive for a few minutes before passing away."

A woman who was in a cafe nearby said she heard the screams.

"I didn't hear the sound of a crash or anything like that. I just looked out and could see him on the ground," she said.

A cyclist said he had passed the scene while emergency service personnel were working on the man.

"It looked very bad," he said.

Garda Forensic Collision Investigators were called to the scene last night and traffic diversions were put in place.

Crossing

Medical equipment, a screen and blood stains were clearly visible at the site of the accident, which was beside a pedestrian crossing.

Gardai have appealed for witnesses following the accident.
