Passenger had cleaver under front seat of car
A GARDA quickly grabbed a car passenger's hands after he went to produce a meat cleaver from the vehicle floor, a court heard.
Karl Adams (43) denied producing the cleaver, claiming he only picked it up "to see what it was".
Judge John Lindsay fined Adams €250 after the defendant, of Brookview Drive in Tallaght, was found guilty before Tallaght District Court of possession of a meat cleaver.
Garda Ciaran Moroney said he was on mobile patrol on Fortunestown Lane in Tallaght in the early hours of March 18 last when he saw a car in a ditch.
Gda Moroney said he went to speak to Adams, who was a front seat passenger, but he refused to speak to him.
The garda said Adams then went to produce a meat cleaver from the floor between his legs.
Gda Moroney immediately grabbed his hands.
In his evidence, Adams, a painter and decorator, claimed his partner had loaned the car to another individual and he must have left the cleaver under the front seat.
He also claimed he was drunk as he had been celebrating St Patrick's Day and only picked up the cleaver "to see what it was".
Judge Lindsay ordered the destruction of the meat cleaver.
