THE politician who poured paint over Mary Harney attended a City Council meeting last night -- even though the Lord Mayor has called for her resignation.

Gardai are carrying out a significant review of protection measures for Cabinet members in light of the paint- throwing incident.

Ironically the actions of Republican Cllr Louise Minihan means that the Government is now even less likely to consider downgrading the garda chauffeur service provided to ministers.

The Ballyfermot representative may also face public order charges as a result of her protest at Cherry Orchard Hospital yesterday.

Lord Mayor Gerry Breen said: "This is not a legitimate form of protest. It was an appalling and dangerous action which will be condemned by all right-thinking people.

He added: "The fact that the attack was undertaken by an elected representative of Dublin City Council at an official function makes it all the more serious."

He added that attempts by Cllr Minihan to justify her actions on yesterday's Liveline programme were "nauseous in the extreme".

Gardai questioned Cllr Minihan (29) for a short time yesterday as a paint-soaked Ms Harney carried on with the sod-turning ceremony on a new mental health facility.

Despite the controversy, Cllr Minihan -- a member of far-left Republican group Eirigi -- turned up at a scheduled council meeting last night where there was no mention of the paint attack.

She had argued earlier that she wanted to highlight how the upcoming "blood budget . . . will result in the unnecessary and avoidable deaths of hundreds, if not thousands, of people over the coming years".
