Overseas trips down 13% in first quarter of year

Many Irish people are choosing not to travel overseas for their holidays this year, with statistics showing that trips abroad are down by around 13 percent.

The number of overseas trips taken by Irish residents was 13% lower in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year.

The Central Statistics Office says this was the first quarterly fall in trips abroad since the first three months of 2000.

The largest decline was in trips to the continent, which were down 17%.

Meanwhile, the number of overseas visits to Ireland by foreign residents was down 9% in the first quarter compared to the corresponding three-month period last year.
