O'Reilly's Castlemartin estate for sale at €30m

The home of ex-billionaire businessman Anthony O'Reilly has been put on the market for a €30m-plus price tag.

Castlemartin is situated just outside the town of Kilcullen, and the house was bought by O'Reilly in 1973 after being on the market for two years. He continued to buy land around the house over a 40-year period.

Stars and world figures including Nelson Mandela and Paul Newman have stayed at the estate in the past.

Bill Clinton, Edward Kennedy, Gregory Peck and Martha Stewart have also stayed at Castlemartin.

The ten-bedroom Georgian house has six reception rooms which overlook the Liffey, and has 28 rooms in total making up 26.000 sq ft.

Added to the house is a long breakfast room, with a glass wall giving a panoramic view of the river, and a swimming pool.

insolvent O'Reilly has called Castlemartin his spiritual home in the past, with both his parents buried on the site.

The move to sell the 750-acre estate and farmland in Co Kildare follows a €22.6m judgment against Mr O'Reilly by AIB. The bank claimed he was insolvent and appointed a receiver over certain assets of an investment vehicle controlled by him.

AIB, which claims Mr O'Reilly is insolvent, has security over portions of Mr O'Reilly's Castlemartin Estate, and gate and caretaker lodges.

The Commercial Court heard that the sale of Castlemartin, was key to Mr O'Reilly's ability to repay AIB and other creditors.
